Kashgar is located in the westernmost of China and the southwest of Xinjiang. It is also at the junction of the two branches of the old Silk Road, the Southern Silk Road and the Northern Silk Road.
Kashgar has been an important trade center since the silk road until today. From the roads in eastern and central China, the northern and southern parts of the Taklimakan Desert are separated. Kashgar is the place where the two roads meet again in the western part of the desert.
